Back-to-School & Substance Abuse Primary Prevention Month

America's future depends on the health, safety, and success of the next generation—and each of you plays an essential role in making that future possible. As outlined in the 2026 National Drug Control Strategy, one of the most powerful ways to reduce addiction is to prevent drug use before it ever begins. Together, we have an opportunity to strengthen communities and help make living drug-free the social norm for America's youth.

As students across the country prepare to return to the classroom, communities have a unique opportunity to reinforce healthy choices and positive futures. In recognition of Substance Abuse Primary Prevention Month this August, the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) is highlighting the critical role of primary prevention in helping young people stay healthy, reach their full potential, and succeed in school and in life.

As a ONDCP-funded DFC and CARA grant recipient, we are on the front lines of this effort. Every day, our partnerships, programs, and community leadership help prevent youth substance use before it starts. Throughout August, we encourage you to help us amplify the message that primary prevention works and that living drug-free is the healthy, positive, and expected choice for America's youth.

This Back-to-School season, join us in showcasing the incredible work happening in our community. We will be collaborating with our sector representatives and SSAY Coalition members to advance our Nation's prevention goals, we invite you to join us in our submission of success stories to DFC & CARA. Our stories highlight the impact of primary prevention, celebrate community leadership, and inspire others to make living drug-free the healthy, positive choice.
